Jeannie Seely, a country music icon and champion for female songwriters everywhere, passed away at the age of 85. With over 5,000 Opry appearances, 13 consecutive years of Billboard Hot Country Hits, and more iconic fashion moments than we can count, Seely paved the way for women in country music to chart their path by unapologetically forging her own. Here are some of our most iconic Jeannie Seely moments, in country music and fashion, of course, because she couldn't have one without the other.

1. Recreation of 1974 Outfit in 2024
One of the most iconic outfits in Jeannie Seely's catalog, she wore this classic '70s outfit to the Opry House not once but twice, in 1974 and in 2024. With the help of Dolly Parton's styling team, she was able to recreate her original take on this iconic outfit and prove that some things honestly never go out of style. Seely was known for breaking down barriers in fashion, and showing her midriff on the Opry Stage was one way to do it. In 2024, she didn't shy away from this at all, and we think she looked great in both versions!
2. Being the First Female Host at the Opry
About 5,000 appearances ago, Jeannie Seely first made her debut on the Opry stage in 1966, where she introduced performers and set the tone for the show to come. In 1968, she started hosting the half-hour segment at the Opry, which was a position that was typically reserved for men. This made her the first woman to ever host at the Opry, a position which she would use in future years to mentor young songwriters and continue to pave the way for women in the music industry.
3. "The Unsinkable Seely"
In 2010, Nashville went through a tough time. Over 13 inches of rainfall in three days left many families and homes devastated, including Jeannie Seely, who lost most of her iconic wardrobe in the flooding. The day after her home was destroyed, the singer made an appearance at the Opry in borrowed clothes instead of her own, and approached the situation with humor, saying, "Well, I can't kick back on the couch and watch TV." In May 2025, she earned the nickname "The Unsinkable Seely" in part because of this iconic moment, but also because of her resilience as a person in general.
4. The Gingham Mini Skirt
Not many people know this, but before the '60s, women were expected to wear long conservative dresses at the Opry, and Jeannie Seely, being from California, wasn't aware of this unwritten rule. After joining the Opry in 1967, Seely made an appearance on stage in a gingham miniskirt, being the first woman ever to wear something like that on the Opry stage. When confronted about this by the manager at the time, she replied, "Okay, I'll make you a deal. I won't wear any in the back door if you don't let anybody in the front door with a miniskirt on." Since the audience wasn't going to let somebody dictate their fashion choices, Jeannie Seely wasn't either, and so, she and her miniskirt made history.
