Recently, Stein posted an update on the situation on his Instagram page. He noted how the authorities have finally made some arrests.

"Arrests have been made and announced today in Akira's case," Stein wrote. "The DEA, US Attorney folks from the NYC Southern District and NYPD have been very sympathetic and respectful all through this process and I can't thank them enough for this hope of some justice for her. Please be careful."

And while there will undoubtedly be a trial, which will bring up some painful memories, both Stein and De Niro's families are one step closer to getting justice for their loved ones.

The BBC Has Reported on the Potential Charges

The BBC reports that prosecutors charged five suspects with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute.

"Through their alleged actions, these defendants left behind a trail of irreversible loss that cut short the lives of three teenagers who held boundless potential and who had already made profound, immeasurable impacts on those who knew them," said Homeland Security Investigations New York special agent in charge Ricky Patel in a statement on Thursday.

According to reports, both Stein and De Niro-Rodriguez passed away after consuming fentanyl-laced pills distributed by the defendants.

Shortly after Akira's passing, Blondie singer Debbie Harrie warned of the danger surrounding Fentanyl.

"I will grieve for the rest of my life along with Barbara Sicuranza and Chris Stein, her mom and dad, and her sister Vali, at our terrible loss," Harris wrote on Instagram. "Fentanyl is too dangerous, seductive and easy to get."

As reported by the BBC, if found guilty, the charges will carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison. There is the potential for a maximum life sentence for the defendants. No reports have yet indicated when the trial will take place.
