On Thursday, his wife, Betty, revealed that Malo had been rushed to the hospital. The family had plans to see a show at the Ryman honoring Raul and his career. But due to the unexpected, they were unable to make it.
"Our love is fighting hard right now but not a second goes by that he doesn't appreciate all the love everyone shows him," Betty wrote in an uplifting
Facebook message. "The boys and I had to bring him to the ER earlier today but (Raul Malo) is stable and ready to fight. We are all excited for (The Ryman) shows and hope everyone enjoys them! Raul has changed many lives and his music has brought so much love to so many people. Let's all stand with him and rally!!!"Malo first announced his cancer diagnosis in June of 2024. He followed this by undergoing surgery to remove a tumor in his liver, as well as chemotherapy. In September of this year, the songwriter announced that his disease had progressed to Leptomeningeal Disease, or (LMD), an incurable form of cancer. This means that cancer cells had started making their way to Malo's nervous system, which is very serious.
Raul Malo's Musical Legacy
Raul Malo is known for being the frontman of the Mavericks, which has been playing together for 35 years. However, Malo also boasts an impressive solo career, having worked with creatives like Neil Diamond and Bernie Taupin. During the periods when the Mavericks took time off, he also worked on solo projects, including his 2001 album Today.
Last month, the Mavericks announced that a show honoring his musical legacy would be held at the Ryman Auditorium. Malo was to be present, but not perform, according to their statement.
"We're proud to announce the Dance The Night Away: A 35-year Musical Legacy Celebrating The Mavericks & Honoring Raul Malo, December 5-6 at (Ryman) Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee." The band described the concert as,"A 2-night tribute show in honor of Raul and the band's decades-long history and contributions to American and Latin music, these special evenings will feature guest appearances from an exceptional lineup of friends and artists performing selections from The Mavericks' storied catalog of classics."
The show included a long list of special performers, including Jimmie Vaughn, Patty Griffin, and Steve Earl.
