Football players are allowed to back out of bowl games for many reasons. It is common to see them take a step back from a game for health reasons or to prepare for bigger games. However, a whole football team dropping out of a bowl game is unusual.
In this case, the Marshall Thundering Herd have decided not to play the Army Black Knights due to their football team just not being up to scratch. In the NCAA Transfer Portal, over 25 of the Marshall players entered, leaving the team without some of their stars.
Along with the 25 players is their coach, Charles Huff. He has left his position as head coach, and taken a new job at Southern Mississippi. Many of the Marshall players have followed him there. These huge cuts to the football team have left them feeling unfit to play the rest of the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.
Marshall Thundering Herd Football Team To Return Next Seasons Bowl
Despite bowing out for this season due to huge team changes, they will be eligible to play for the next. Sometimes it is best to know when you're not up to scratch. It is wise to take a step back and regroup rather than risk reputation.
In a game like American football, standings and ranking are everything. Rather than damage their team's reputation for the season, the football team is going to forgo the bowl and come back when they're back on their feet. The huge shake-up of losing a head coach and 25 players would never reflect well on the team's performance.
A replacement was needed for the absent Marshalls football team in the bowl season. However, only certain teams could qualify. According to Brett McMurphy, Louisiana Tech will replace Marshall in this competition. This team is located in Rushton, LA. Hopefully, they put up a good fight in their newfound position in the bowl.
