At 58, pro golfer John Daly has definitely carved out a niche for himself. That's not only in the golfing world, but in the sports world in general and in the public's collective imagination. While doing some research for this story, I came across a reference to him that made me smile. Daly was described as having "a non-country-club appearance and attitude."

Well, yeah, I would pretty much agree. He now sports a bushy white Santa-type beard that reminds me of David Letterman's. Daly has always proudly done things his own iconoclastic way, even down to smoking a cigarette on the links - the possible pushback of purists be damned. In the rather tradition-bound (some might say staid) environment of golf, that is really something.

With His Beard, White Shaggy Hair, And Loud Orange-Patterned Pants, Daly Stood Out

As he strode the links, Daly seemed utterly nonchalant in a video dated December 21, 2024, and posted on X by the PGA Tour. He groused about the chilly temps, obligingly signed an autograph or two, and easily landed a putt with one hand. Everywhere on the course, people warmly greeted and hugged him. Despite his advancing age and gaining some weight, Daly's swing is as mighty as ever.

They Adore His Refusal To Conform

The comments from fans more than hint at Daly's popularity. One posted, "John Daly is absolutely hilarious - he's still got that charm and swagger! Golf needs more of his energy. Always a showstopper!"

Another admiring person wrote, "Cocktail in 1 hand and putting with the other hand. Legend," followed by a flames emoji.

"John Daly is an American treasure!!," declared yet another.

One lamented, "Imagine if this guy would have put in a fraction of the practice Tiger [Woods] did. So much talent gone to waste with his bad habits during the years...."

He Has Certainly Had His Share Of Problems

Per Sportskeeda, Daly has been through the mill, so to speak. Over the years, he racked up a long list of major infractions in golf. Daly handed over more than $100,000 in fines, was called on the carpet "21 times for 'failing to give best efforts," has gotten five suspensions, was instructed seven times by the PGA brass to seek treatment for his drinking excesses, and landed 11 citations "for conduct unbecoming of a professional."

All I can think of is the Fleetwood Mac song, "Go Your Own Way," That has been John Daly's staunch philosophy all along, and surely will continue to be.
