The singing competition revolves around celebrities hiding behind costumes when performing. They then reveal themselves after being eliminated or winning the show. The UK judges voted for the "Bear" instead of Gray's "Toad in the Hole" persona, leading to the awkward display of annoyance.
The judges, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, Maya Jama, Jonathan Ross, guest judge Suranne Jones, and the audience were all stunned. It even surprised the host Joel Dommett who said "What is going on?"
Since the "Toad" had yet to reveal themselves to the audience, they had to come back. "Okay, I'm told Toad in the Hole will return to the stage," the host explained after getting Gray back onstage.
The eliminated contestant revealed herself to be Macy Gray, an American R&B singer and actress. Afterward, Gray joined Dommett for a Q&A that turned awkward fast. The singer, best known for I Try in 1999, didn't show much enthusiasm to the first question.
"Did you have fun on the show?" The host asked Gray, to which she replied with a simple "Yeah." Gray seemed a little soured by the experience. "You know, I've been singing for a long time, and now I'm a toad," she added.
The host poked fun at the awkward moment on Instagram after posting the Q&A video with the caption "Lol."
Much of the online responses to this moment expressed feeling second-hand embarrassment. "Macy Gray...that was embarrassing," one post wrote.

Despite all of the negative comments toward this moment, there were a handful of people who found it funny. One person called Macy Gray "almost in tears raging" at her loss while in a toad costume "just peak British tv."
Another user on X called it the "greatest thing of 2025 so far," so some got enjoyment out of Gray's outburst.
