With so much at stake, and the entire US watching, the pressure is on at the Super Bowl. This has resulted in some pretty big, and very televised mistakes. Everything from performances that ruin careers to injuries that do the same have been witnessed in the biggest sporting event in the US.
#5 1990 Denver Broncos Vs San Francisco 49ers
We may as well start off with the most savage loss in Super Bowl history. This absolute annihilation is still the biggest points difference of any Super Bowl, and it spelled disaster for the Broncos. The end score came to a staggering 45-point difference. The match was hyped up before it started too, but the game itself was just an embarrassment.
#4 Tim Krumrie Super Bowl XXIII Disaster
It's never nice to see a professional athlete suffer a devastating injury. Players at the top of their game have been brought down, never to play again, with one bad mistake.
This was the case for Tim Krumrie in this Super Bowl disaster. While playing for the Bengal Tigers he suffered a leg break that would turn your stomach. On the 14th play of the game, Krumrie twisted his ankle and broke his tibia and fibula. That was his last Super Bowl, but he didn't let it stop him from playing. With a steel rod in his leg, he continued to play until 1994.
#3 1999 Just For Feet Ad Spot
Super Bowl commercials are some of the most expensive spots in the yearly TV cycle, but this one was a disaster. The advert showed a barefoot Kenyan man running from a Humvee full of American soldiers. They drugged him with laced water, and he wakes up to find his feet in a new pair of trainers.
The ad spot was banded as insensitive, racist, and neo-colonial. It was. As a result, Just For Feet sued Saatchi & Saatchi for malpractice, who then countersued. Just For Feet ended up filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy later that year and dropped the lawsuit.
#2 Justin Timberlake & Janet Jackson Superbowl Disaster
It had to be on the list at some point. The famous nip slip at the end of JT and Janet Jackson's performance cost Timberlake years of his career, put Jackson's in the ground, and caused MTV to pull out of the music game altogether.
Pulling away her top at the end of their show revealed her breast, complete with pasty, to the world. Whether this was planned or not is up for discussion. Either way, America the Prudish was horrified at the sight.
#1 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Parade Riots
After their Super Bowl XXVII win, the Dallas Cowboys returned to their home city victorious. But, all hell broke loose as the barricades separating the players from the fans failed. The crowd of a reported 400,000 swarmed forward, and the police were overwhelmed.
The ensuing riots resulted in four people wounded, three stabbed and 21 needing medical attention. This makes it one of the biggest Super Bowl disasters. Riots and American football go hand in hand these days, but nobody could guess why. It's a strange tradition.
