If I was a producer on The Voice or American Idol, I would be kicking myself that I didn't pick up someone like Luke Combs. Recently, he spoke with 60 Minutes: Australia for an interview. There, he talks about everything from his coming of age in his career to almost being stuck overseas with Ed Sheeran. What's evident about the "Hurricane" singer is that he doesn't take any of this for granted. He knows none of this was promised and he uses those moments of uncertainty as motivation to keep going.

For instance, Combs recalls how The Voice sent him a letter of rejection. Usually, a lot of people would be dejected by such an opportunity slipping through their fingers. However, it merely acted as confirmation that he's on the right path and to keep going.
"To me, the letter was validation of the things that I already thought, which was, 'I think that I have the ability to do this.' Getting on the show, to me, it was never about that. It was never, 'I need to get on the show, that'll be my big break.' That was not the thought at the time," Combs explains.
Luke Combs Uses Rejection from The Voice to Catapult Into Stardom
Essentially, the letter confirms what Luke already knows: he's one hell of a talent. He explains that the show was looking for something a little more than just raw talent. Consequently, Combs didn't take any of it to heart. As long as they think he's got the voice, no pun intended, he can make it.
"The letter essentially said, 'Hey, you're a really great singer, but this is a show and there needs to be entertainment value and we have to be able to tell a story... and you just don't really have a story.' I was okay with that. I was like, 'Whatever, that's great. So you're saying I'm a pretty good singer?' That's all I needed to hear," Combs says.
Admittedly, Luke understands why they didn't take the swing on him. He says he wouldn't either. But ultimately, it proves to be a blessing in disguise and he wouldn't do anything differently. "I was always say that if the shoe was on the other foot and I was the producer, and I walked in, I'd be like, 'You telling me this guy is the guy that's going to be doing something? No, I don't think so pal.' I would've said the same thing. I probably wouldn't have believed in me either," Combs says. "One of the best things that ever happened to me.. not getting on The Voice. Probably saved me from a completely different path that would have not led to here. I'm thankful for sure."
