Sheryl Crow found herself on the receiving end of backlash after a post on social media prompted her to address the situation directly.
Videos by Wide Open Country
According to WhiskeyRiff, the Country music star is open about her political stance and support for the Democratic party. She's also not the biggest fan of Elon Musk's involvement with the Trump Administration, a sentiment echoed by a recent post on Instagram.
In the short video, Crow poses by her Tesla on a pickup truck. She then waves the driver away and follows it down the driveway, constantly looking back at the camera as she does it. Crow posted the footage with a message:
'My parents always said... you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla.
Money donated to @npr, which is under threat by President Musk, in hopes that the truth will continue to find its way to those willing to know the truth.'
The post has garnered almost 250,000 likes, but the replies are mixed.
Many of the most upvoted comments support what they see in the video. However, others accuse Crow of virtue signaling and supporting government waste. The most damning replies also point out the background. Several eagle-eyed posters notice something unusual about the trees. User supermarlamortgages replied:
'We live pretty close to each other, and that's not a recent video. There are no leaves on the ground like that right now. That's from last fall.'
The comments section for the video has since been muted.
Crow Provides Context In A Follow-Up Video
Sheryl Crow took to Instagram again to explain the situation, particularly the seasonal differences. Crow explains 'It's all about intention. My intention is to support causes I care about, and to make my be voice heard.'
In the video, Crow dismisses users pointing out the seasonal mixup as 'hate,' saying, "For those of you who were on the hate side of things, yeah, there were some leaves on the tree because, yes, I did donate my Tesla right after the election."
Crow explains she got confirmation this week that the money from the sold Tesla went to NPR, which prompted her to post. "For me, it was important as I understood the NPR would be going away," she added. Crow also addressed comments asking why she didn't give the money to hurricane victims.
"I give a **** ton of money to things I care about, including hurricane victims and the environment and safe schools and cancer research," she said. Responses seem more optimistic on this post. However, the comments are limited, which means they are potentially vetted.
