This is a return to the show for the American Idol alumni, this time placing her on the other side of the judging and coaching panel. Her previous experience with the talent show mill will undoubtedly add some insight into the process for her lucky contestants.

A post-Oscars special gave us our first glimpse of Underwood as a coach. She was faced with the show's first contestant, a UK-based singer-songwriter. He took the opportunity to cover one of the coach's songs, boldly tackling Lionel Richie's "Easy."

It's a brave move to cover someone's song in front of them, but it went down well. Carrie Underwood was taken by the American Idol performance, saying, "I felt my heart aflutter," adding that it was the "perfect song choice."

Pre-Show Nerves For Underwood

This will be the first time Carrie Underwood has been a coach on American Idol, and it's made her a little nervous, understandably. "I don't know why I'm nervous, I'm not auditioning!" she said of her appearance on the show.

Of course, there are probably residual nerves left over from when she was in the spotlight. But now, she is the one calling the shots. The musical hopefuls' fates are in her hands as she guides them through the show. I am sure that as the weeks go by, she will settle into her role and find her stride.

Carrie Underwood will bring something new to the panel of coaches, as everyone does. She is the replacement for Katy Perry but has a very different demeanor. Her approach, so far, seems much more subdued. However, one teaser clip released has a contestant admitting they are afraid of Carrie Underwood.

Due to her previous experience with American Idol, Carrie Underwood is going to be able to provide some much needed insider knowledge for the contestants. Unlike the other coaches, she knows exactly what it takes to win. It will be interesting to see what advice she can give as the series progresses.
