An inquest opened Tuesday, March 11, at Avon Coroner's Court. The BBC reports the provisional cause of death as combined toxicity from heroin, methadone, codeine, pregabalin, cocaine, and zopiclone, worsened by benzodiazepine use.

Coroner's officer Alexis Camp confirmed Danan was found unresponsive. "Emergency services attended and confirmed he had sadly died," Camp said.

A postmortem followed, with samples sent for further testing.

Soap Star Remembered

Danan's management, Independent Creative Management, broke the news on Instagram.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old," the post read. They hailed his "exceptional talent" and "unwavering kindness," calling him a "beacon of light."

Fame came early for Danan. He starred in the long-running soap "Hollyoaks" and later appeared on "Celebrity Big Brother" and "Celebrity Love Island." But addiction shadowed his success. The Guardian notes he spent roughly 1 million British pounds on rehab. The Mirror claims he entered treatment 17 times, once recalling a co-star handing him cocaine on his first "Hollyoaks" day. "I didn't really know much about coke," he said. "He was like, 'welcome.'"

Danan's struggles deepened over time. He admitted to the Mirror, "I relapse a lot." Experimentation began at 14 with ecstasy, but cocaine hooked him later. A vaping addiction landed him in the hospital in June 2024 with respiratory failure. Legal woes piled up too. He faced a plea hearing on Jan. 16 for cocaine and cannabis possession, per BBC court documents, and had prior charges for drugged driving.

His partner, Melissa Crooks, identified his body. The coroner set May 28 for a full inquest.
