Around Lake Atitlan in Guatemala are numerous indigenous Mayan communities. The lake is used for many things, including washing, fishing, and the occasional baptism. However, as one man was being blessed in the holy water, something went drastically wrong, and he drowned.

The lake has a lot of spiritual meaning for the people who live around it. For thousands of years Mayan people have maintained their communities through conquest, colonisation, and more. The significance of the vast body of water cannot be understated.
Regular baptisms occur in the water of Atitlan, blessing the lake and dunking church members. They invariably go off without a hitch, but the bapsism held in the southwest town of San Lucas Tolimán ended fatally.
45-year-old Miguel Sut was standing by as a member of the congregation prepared to be dipped. But, as they were baptised, they appeared to slip into a deeper part of the lake. Sut rushed to their aid while they floundered, unable to swim or pick themselves up.
People watching the baptism in Lake Atitlan ran from the shore to pull the freshly baptised person out. But, although they assisted in helping the struggling church member, Miguel Sut was forced under water in his efforts to save the saved.
Miguel Sut Gave His Life In Order To Save Another
Sadly, Miguel Sut lost his life while saving another. He was held under the water and was unable to surface in time to catch his breath. Footage from the scene shows him being pulled to shore by members of his congregation.
The baptism forgotten, Sut was dragged from the lake and given CPR by local people. However, their efforts were in vain, and he was pronounced dead on the scene when the emergency services arrived. "We tried everything to save him, but he didn't respond to first aid," Juan Cuc, one of the members of the Guatemalan church, said.
Lake Atitlan is a magnificent place, with volcanic water that holds the history of its people for the thousands of years they have been there. Miguel Sut gave his life to save another from drowning in the lake.
