High School Football Star Is Dead But Why Have People Raised $100K For His Alleged Killer — Let's Examine

Any time anything tragic happens in the US, there seems to be a GoFundMe begging for money even before the news hits the headlines. With the alleged stabbing of a high school football star, there is a page raising money for both the victim and the accused killer. Collectively, they have raised about $400,000.

At a track meet, Karmelo Anthony was arrested and accused of fatally stabbing 7-year-old Austin Metcalf. After an argument, witnesses say that Anthony pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed the young man in his heart.

"I pushed my hand on there [his brother's chest], to try and make it stop and I grabbed his head and I looked in his eyes," The victim's twin bother told Fox. "I just saw his soul leave, and it took my soul too." The tragic event resulted in the immediate arrest of Anthony.

He admitted to the police that he did it and is being held on a $1 million bail. However, there is money being raised for the alleged killer. It is currently sitting at about $145,000 of a $200,000 goal. Although, what the money is for is still unclear.

Alleged Killer And Victim Asking For Money

Whenever anyone dies in the US, their families will start a GoFundMe. It doesn't matter how rich they already are, they will make the most of the death to try and make a little money. Recently, a woman whose child died in a pool started a GoFundMe despite living in a multimillion-pound house.

The high school football player also has a GoFundMe which is currently sitting at around a quarter of a million dollars. But, more interestingly, the alleged killer also has his own website for money to be raised. The quote on the page is vague about the purpose of the money.

"The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful. As a family of faith, we are deeply grateful for all of your support during this trying period. Your prayers and assistance mean more to us now more than ever," the page says.

It is signed by the Anthony family. Although the page doesn't say what the money is for, I expect it will be used to pay legal bills. They are insisting that the young man acted in self-defence. He told police he did what he did to protect himself. However, there were around 40 witnesses to the act, so the police will hardly be short of evidence.

The begging nature of GoFundMe after any tragic event is quite a grotesque one. Turning a family tragedy such as death into a money-making scheme is a new level of depravity. However, I can understand why the alleged killer needs money to be raised. His legal fees are going to be massive.
