Elton John Squashes Petty, Decades Long Feud With Madonna

Celebrity feuds can blossom out of the silliest things. People can go without talking to each others for years over their disagreements. The whole time it was something that probably could've been fixed. This definitely seems like the case between Madonna and Elton John. For over two decades, they carried out this silent treatment, a cold war at a standstill after the "Rocket Man" singer spoke lowly of the pop star.

Back in 2002, John slammed Madonna's take on the Bond theme "Die Another Day," calling it "the worst Bond tune ever." Admittedly, he would've been correct. It really is a late career abomination in a pretty turbulent decade for her. Additionally, Elton was probably trying to protect the sanctity of one of the most iconic British characters of all time. Then in 2004, he trashes her as a live act at an awards show and accuses her of lip-syncing. It was pretty clear that he didn't like what Madonna brought to the table as an artist and it hurt her deeply. However, with the pair growing older and wiser, it appears like they've settled the feud.

Madonna Accepts Elton John's Apology, Teases Potential Collaboration

Recently, Madonna posted a picture on Instagram of herself and Elton John embracing backstage at SNL. There, she reveals that they "buried the hatchet" and recalls the impact his music held on her early in her life. "I remembered when I was in high school- I snuck out of the house one night to see Elton perform live in Detroit! It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music," Madonna writes.

"Seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different," she continues of Elton. "To stand out, to take the road, less traveled by. In fact, it was essential."

Then, Madonna admits that John's disdain of her really bruised her. Consequently, when she learned that Elton would perform at SNL to promote his upcoming record with Brandi Carlile, she had to go. When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, "Forgive Me" and the wall between us fell down," she adds. "Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes, we were hugging. Then he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!!"
