According to CNN, Konig entered his not guilty plea during a brief hearing on Monday. While Konig was not physically present, he appeared via video feed from the Oahu Community Correctional Center. He is currently being held without bail following his arrest on March 24.
Additionally, Konig's defense attorney, Thomas Otake, stated that he plans on filing a motion that will allow Konig to be granted bail. According to Otake, bail is common in attempted murder cases. Konig's trial is set to begin in June 2025.
According to a restraining order petition issued by Arielle Konig, his wife, Gerhardt Konig allegedly attempted to push her off a hiking trail at the Pali Lookout in Oahu, Hawaii. The couple had traveled to Hawaii to celebrate Arielle's birthday.
Attempted Murder
The petition alleged that, ever since December 2024, Gerhard had experienced "extreme jealousy" over a suspected affair committed by Arielle. The alleged murder attempt took place after Arielle refused to take a picture with Gerhardt.
"When I got close to Gerhardt, Gerhardt grabbed me by my upper arms and started pushing me back towards the cliff edge," Arielle alleged. "He was yelling something to the effect of, 'Get back over there, l'm so f**king sick of you!' and continued to push me. If I had fallen off the cliff, I would have likely died."
Gerhardt would then allegedly grab a rock and strike her on the head multiple times. Moreover, it is alleged that Gerhardt tried to inject her with two syringes containing an unknown substance. Two hikers heard her cries for help, and Gerhard allegedly fled the scene. Reportedly, Gerhardt FaceTimed his son, saying that Arielle "got away." He was later found and arrested by local police.
Arielle's attorney, Steve Alm, issued a statement saying that "domestic abuse cannot be tolerated."
"Our office is committed to ensuring that justice is served for the victim and that the defendant is held accountable," Alm said.
Following his arrest, Konig's employer, the Maui Memorial Medical Center, issued a statement via a representative. They confirmed that he has since been suspended.
"Dr. Konig's medical staff privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center have been suspended pending investigation," the statement reads. " Maui Health takes these concerns and the safety of its patients very seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate."
Arielle also accused Gerhardt Konig of sexual abuse and assault in her petition.
