Actress, Who Used Dead Son's Sperm To Have Granddaughter With Surrogate, Speaks Out

Ana Obregón, a prominent Spanish actress, drew attention in 2023 when she welcomed a child through surrogacy using sperm from her late son, Aless Lequio, who died of cancer in 2022. The 70-year-old actress later clarified that the child, named Anita, is her granddaughter. Obregón pledged to raise Anita with stories of her father's bravery.

In an April 2023 interview with Hola! magazine, Obregón explained her role. "This girl is my granddaughter, not my daughter," she said. "She is Aless' daughter. I will tell her that her dad was a hero." She committed to ensuring Anita grows up proud of her father's legacy.

Obregón recently spoke on Spanish television about the happiness Anita brings. Toys and stuffed animals fill her home, including a ball pool for playtime. She noted physical strain from lifting Anita as the child grows but emphasized their strong bond. The actress says she continues to mourn Aless, finding comfort in her granddaughter's presence.

Actress Stirs Debate

Obregón recalled the devastation of Aless' cancer diagnosis at age 25. "You think life is eternal," she said. "Then they tell you your child has aggressive cancer." His death left her shattered. She described feeling "dead for three years" until Anita's birth. "Anita fills my days," Obregón told ¡Hola! in March 2025, celebrating her granddaughter's second birthday.

The surrogacy arrangement stirred debate in Spain, where the practice is banned. Anita was born in the United States, and Obregón adopted her, securing legal guardianship. This pathway, permissible under Spanish law for children born abroad, sparked discussions about surrogacy regulations.

Obregón remains candid about her loss. "I'll never feel the happiness I had with Aless," she said. "That pain stays forever." Still, she finds purpose in raising Anita. The actress honors Aless by sharing his strength with his daughter, she says.

As Unilad wrote: "When Ana publicly announced that the child was conceived via surrogacy, it caused a stir in Spain due to the unique situation and the fact surrogacy is illegal in the country. It is lawful to adopt a child who was born abroad, however, Anita was born via surrogate in the US. Following the birth, Ana adopted the child which made her the legal guardian."
