It turns out Zach Top was a great student before dropping out of school to pursue country music. Although it worked out in the end, his parents had a reaction you'd expect them to have.

The Washington country star recently sat down with 92.3 WIL, a commercial radio station in St. Louis, Missouri. There, he spoke briefly about how he was as a student, and his parents' reaction when he dropped out and moved to Nashville.
The host asked Zach Top how his parents reaction to him moving to Nashville, but apparently that wasn't their main concern. His parents were more fussed over the fact that he dropped out of school despite being a good student.
"They had kinda... That wasn't the difficult conversation," he recalled. "The difficult conversation was when I told them I was dropping out of school." Of course, doing what he did is a scary thing, and all a parent wants for their child is security and safety.
Aspects that were about to be blown to the wind.
"They didn't have any clue about the music business. I didn't have a clue, like, I had no connection to anything, you know, outside of the bluegrass world. Which is, you know, what most people there work a day job and then play on the weekends."
Zach Top Was Pretty Studious Before Leaving For Country Music
Thinking about what other bluegrass artists did, he thought he'd do the same.
"And that's what I kinda figured I'd do. I'll go get a good job, that I can afford to be gone on the weekends and play for fun, and then, I just kinda got sick of school, and quit, and... [my parents] were thrilled with that, they thought that was a really wise decision."
"Not."
After relaying that his parents had the reaction you'd expect (although he didn't go into detail), they discuss how good he was in school.
"I was a real good student, I dropped off and I only did a year, I guess, at Boulder, and, I don't know, I just was not engaged with school at all. I was a really good student up till then."
Although his parents were probably worried sick about him, I'm sure they're incredibly proud of him now.
