"It's just a classic country song," Bryan explains. "It's a song that I've always really - I used to cover songs like this, from Broks & Dunn to Clint Black. All the honky tonk songs, and this is my version of that. The first time I heard it, I was like, 'That says everything I wanted to say.'"
When Bryan released the song, he said it was nostalgic for him.
"'Country Song Came On' is like a honky tonk gem for me," Bryan says (via Backstage Country). "When I heard it, I was like, it brings me back to the days when I was playing a lot of honky tonks early in my career. And the fact that I was able to put ETC, which is a nod to Earl Thomas Conley, one of my favorite artists ever, just makes me smile every time I hear it. And this song will definitely make you want to drink a draft beer."
Luke Bryan's Evolution As A Country Artist
"Country Song Came On" might remind Bryan of his early days in country music, although he's a much different person and artist now than when his debut I'll Stay Me record came out in 2007. His evolution is due to his own growth and maturity. But it is also thanks to him being a judge on American Idol since 2018.
"It's like having a looking glass into America's youth," Bryan tells Billboard. "Without American Idol, I wouldn't have a front row seat to the ups and the downs of America's youth, growing up in a new wave of social media, with all the positives and the negatives. I've developed a new appreciation for what our youth go through.
"It's taught me to come from a small town in South Georgia and see the melting pot that America is," he continues. "For me to be able to witness that through the youth and their stories and their differences and watching music bringing us all together, it's been very enlightening for me."
American Idol airs on Sunday and Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
