Alex Trebek might always be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Jeopardy!. He's synonymous with the show at this point. His sly, sophisticated humor pairs well with the heady trivia on display. However, when he passed in 2020 to pancreatic cancer, there was worry that the show would never truly be the same. Who could possibly take over from the iconic game show host? Finding someone with Trebek's trademark charm was a fool's errand. Why not go with someone with an intimate familiarity with the show? Why not Ken Jennings?

Initially, the transition was pretty bumpy. Despite his previous experience participating in the game show, hosting didn't always come natural to Jennings. He could come off particularly awkward, he didn't have that same loose, inviting aura to him that made Trebek so lovable. However, eventually, Ken found his way on the show and he's been pretty comfortable ever since. Additionally, he has something in his repertoire that Trebek never had: he could relate to contestants personally.
Ken Jennings Highlights His Ability to Relate to Jeopardy! Contestants
Recently, the Jeopardy! host spoke with Fox News on the red carpet for the TCM Classic Film Festival. There, he lends tribute to his iconic predecessor but highlights the one thing he brings that's unique to the show. "Alex was a perfect host, but if there's one difference between us is I remember what it was like to be a contestant. My heart just goes out to these people," Ken explains.
His personal experience on Jeopardy! allows for Jennings to personally connect with those who have nervous jitters on the show. If anybody knows what that feels like, it's him. Consequently, he knows how to communicate with contestants and make them feel at ease. "It's their first time on TV, and we throw them into this crucible. It's a high-pressure environment, so I'm always thinking, how can I make these people comfortable? Please, please get this right, somebody," Ken says. "100% empathy out there for these three people."
