The song itself is all loved up, recounting the kind of romance we all dream about. But, while a lot of it is from the heart, the thing that got it into her head was a TV show with Meryl Streep, of all people. The show, titled Only Murders in the Building, had the line of the title as a moving moment for Kelly Clarkson.
As Martin Short sees Maryl Streeps character for the first time, he utters the words "Where have you been?" That heartfelt line plucked not only at Kelly Clarkson's heartstrings but also her got her inspirational juices flowing.
Speaking about the journey to writing her new song, Kelly Clarkson said, "It was just a pure moment. Everything in his face, when he was saying those words, he was just so in awe. He just looked at her and said, 'where have you been?'"
The moment got to Kelly, and she rewatched the moment over and over. "I kept going back to it and rewatching it because, in that moment, so much was said. And I was like, that's a song."
It's Not Just The Show That Inspired Kelly Clarkson's Song
Of course, on the surface, it seems silly. But as she says, it was the meaning behind the moment that spoke to her. "You've got to be grown, to really know what that's like," she continued. "You thought you knew what you wanted, but you were so wrong. And then all of a sudden, you see it standing in front of you. I was so moved."
It's amazing what can spring some a seemingly simple moment on a TV show. It's become the inspiration for Kelly Clarkson's new song. But, of course, it's about her own experiences in life rather than actually singing about a TV show. It just took the show to really awaken those emotions. But, as she said, the whole song was born of those simple words by Martin Short.
Who said binging TV shows was a bad thing?
