A family tragedy, like the one Gary Sinise has struggled with, will often put things into perspective. For the CSI: NY actor, losing his son made him prioritize time with his family over his career. Speaking about his withdrawal from Hollywood, Gary Sinise said, "Something may come along and it'll be right, but it's harder to leave home now."
Speaking to People, he explained, "I just want to be around family. Since losing Mac, I hold my daughters a lot tighter. You think about the things that are really important."
Nobody can blame him for choosing to spend his time with family at the moment. While his son struggled with a 5 and half year battle with cancer, his wife was also diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She survived, but the ordeal was taxing on both Gary Sinise and his family. Now he has chosen to prioritize family life.
A Tough Few Years For Gary Sinise
Before his son's death, Sinise was standing by him, and then his wife, as they fought their cancer. It was a mental struggle, and one that had him praying for solutions. "Hope keeps you in the fight. You could see tumors on his body. You knew the drugs weren't working. But I wasn't thinking we were going to lose him," he said of the years before his son's death.
His heartbreaking memories of his son on his deathbed talk of his fight, but also his acceptance of his life. "He didn't want to go. But I know Mac was at peace at the end. He dealt with it with grace and courage," Gary Sinise remembered.
Losing a child is one of the hardest experiences for a parent. Nobody expects to go before their children. As a way to commemorate his life, Gary Sinise is looking to get some of his son's music published. "I want people to hear his music. I want people to share it. I'm on a mission. I thought the other day, 'What happens when all these projects are done?' Well, I'm going to drag them on as long as I can," he said. He is looking to have an orchestra perform his songs.
