Everything became a little too much for Maren Morris of late, and she declared that she was leaving the 'Toxic' world of country music. However, she's backtracked on that.

Speaking to The New York Times' Popcast podcast, she told all about her experiences with country music over the past few years. For Maren Morris, writing country music simply wasn't enjoyable anymore. It had become oppressive and unpleasant, so she was stepping back from the industry.
"I just couldn't do that after 2020, particularly. I've changed. A lot of things changed about me that year," she began. It wasn't an easy decision, as she explained. "I don't want to say goodbye, but I really cannot participate in the really toxic arms of this institution anymore."
The full reasons for why Maren Morris was kicking her country music habit weren't entirely clear beyond her feelings of toxicity. However, she had previously mentioned that she felt the genre was eating itself. "I thought I'd like to burn it to the ground and start over. But it's burning itself down without my help," she told the Los Angeles Times.
Maren Morris Can Remove Herself From Country, But Can't Remove Country Music From Herself
But, with the new release of her album 'Dreamsicle', she's backtracked on what she said. Calling the Los Angeles Times article "really unfortunate" she's put people straight. "I never said I'm leaving country music, because that's not really how I feel at all," she told The Guardian.
With the production of her new album, she's realized that, no matter how much Maren Morris hates the country music scene, her music will always be country. "You hear country music on this album. You can't just intentionally take the parts away," she said. "There would be nothing left of the sound of me. Because it's just there. It's in my bones and it's in the way I write."
It sounds like Maren Morris was more tired of the country music scene than the music itself. She clearly had an issue with some of the trends and inner workings of the genre. But, at her heart, she is a country music artist, and she can't just switch up genres at the snap of her fingers.
