Neal McDonough Speaks Out About 'Yellowstone' Mystery That Plagued Fans

A lingering Yellowstone plot hole from Season 2 continues to baffle fans: the bomb planted by Kayce Dutton and security guard Torry in the Beck Brothers' airplane. The explosive moment, set up in Episode 9, never paid off, leaving viewers shouting, "What the heck?"

Actor Neal McDonough, who played villain Malcolm Beck, recently addressed the unresolved storyline while promoting his new film, The Last Rodeo, opening in theaters May 23.

In Yellowstone's second season, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Torry (Wolé Parks) slipped a remote-activated bomb into the fuel tank of the Beck Brothers' plane. Fans expected a dramatic explosion, but the show never revisited the device. McDonough, who starred alongside Terry Serpico as the menacing Beck Brothers, offered insight in a Taste of Country interview. "That's a great question," he said, admitting the answer might not satisfy everyone.

McDonough suggested creator Taylor Sheridan deliberately used the bomb as a red herring. "Taylor likes to have mental threats to keep the audience on edge," he explained. Sheridan's knack for subverting expectations shone in Malcolm Beck's death, a tense field showdown rather than a predictable plane explosion. "He could have just blown me away, but he didn't," McDonough said, praising Sheridan's unpredictable storytelling.

Notably, the Beck Brothers never used their plane again, hinting Kayce's plan may have quietly succeeded off-screen. Still, the lack of closure frustrates fans, who speculate that the scene was cut or forgotten.

'Yellowstone' Loose Ends

The bomb isn't Yellowstone's only dangling thread. The Dutton Rules podcast lists nearly a dozen unresolved plots across five seasons, including Tate's dinosaur bones, a native skull unearthed at an airport, and the fate of a boy holding lug nuts during John Dutton's Season 3 shooting. Some mysteries, like bunkhouse member Avery's departure after falling for Kayce in Season 4, are eventually resolved, but the Beck Brothers' bomb remains a fan fixation.

Yellowstone, created by Sheridan and John Linson, aired on Paramount Network from June 20, 2018, to December 15, 2024, spanning 53 episodes. Sheridan, a former actor turned screenwriter, drew from his rural Texas and Wyoming roots to craft the Montana-set neo-Western drama. Initially pitched to HBO, the series landed at Paramount after the network passed in 2017.

McDonough's Next Chapter

McDonough, also starring as Cal Thresher in Sheridan's Tulsa King (returning for Season 3 in September), remains a Sheridan staple. His reflections on Yellowstone highlight Sheridan's bold narrative choices, even if they leave fans puzzled.
