The incident occurred around 6:55 p.m. locally near the 13000 block of La Barr Meadows Road, according to a statement from

Nevada County Consolidated Fire Rescue (NCCFR). The teen had climbed down roughly 15 to 20 feet into the well to retrieve the dogs but became trapped and unable to climb out.

Emergency responders from NCCFR and Grass Valley Fire swiftly arrived on the scene and launched a coordinated rope rescue operation.

"Upon assessment, our team determined that the terrain and shaft depth required a vertical rope rescue operation," said Fire Chief Jason Robitaille. "Safety was our top priority, and we implemented a systematic approach to bring all three victims to the surface safely."

Video footage shared by NCCFR shows rescuers pulling one of the dogs up using a rope system, prompting emotional cheers from a woman nearby. "I'm so happy!" she exclaims as the dog reaches solid ground.

The entire rescue operation took about one hour. Through careful coordination and maneuvering, crews successfully brought the teen and both dogs to safety.

All's Well That Ends Well

Paramedics evaluated the teen at the scene and confirmed there were no serious injuries. The dogs showed signs of minor dehydration but were otherwise unharmed, officials said.

"This could've ended much differently," the department wrote in a follow-up Facebook post. "We're grateful for the quick response, teamwork, and a successful outcome for both the teen and the pets."

Authorities did not release the teen's name, but they praised the bravery shown in trying to help the dogs.

The shaft, officials noted, was part of an abandoned well structure. Local residents were reminded to report unsecured or hazardous openings to emergency services to prevent similar incidents.

Community Applauds Response

The video quickly garnered praise from social media users, with many applauding the teen's courage and the responders' efficiency. As one commenter wrote: "Heroes all around — including the teen who put their love for their dogs above everything else."

Fire officials urged the public to avoid attempting rescues in hazardous terrain and instead call 911.
