Teen Injured In Tragic Accident After Leaving Church Dance

A young girl sustained serious injuries when she was reportedly struck by a car in Utah as she was departing from a church dance, per People. The event, which was run by "several congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," took place on May 30 at the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo grounds. Per the outlet, the 14-year-old had "significant head trauma."

She was being treated at a hospital in Salt Lake City. The teen was apparently crossing a street by herself when the accident occurred.

A Lehi City spokesperson declined to elaborate on specifics of the girl's condition. An investigation into the accident is still ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.

Neighbors Said They Heard 'Screams And A Loud Crash'

A man named Ed Barney, who lives in the immediate vicinity of the accident, said he heard the crash. It was frightening. "I heard some screams and a loud crash; it was a pretty forceful crash. It sounded like it might've been between two cars." He and his wife peered out one of their windows. They observed that a person was evidently struck by a vehicle.

He added per the outlet via KSTU, "Then we saw a bunch of people gathering around the young lady right here in front of our house."

Per fox13now.com, Barney also commented, "There were a lot of kids out on both sides of the road last night, and it did look like it was really confusing. Oftentimes, the vehicles travel past our house are going way too fast. If we see a function like this where there are a lot of kids around, we need to slow down and pay attention to what's going on,"

Police Officers Assisted The Teen Before Emergency Personnel Arrived On Scene

According to the outlet, "Officers gave aid to the girl until emergency responders arrived." Officials did not provide any indication as to whether speeding, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the tragic situation. The driver is reportedly cooperating with the police as they look into what took place.

"The facts that are known at this point does appear this is an accident, a very tragic accident," said Patrol Supervisor David Colqui. He is from the Lehi Police Department, per People via KUTV.
