Just last month, country singer Ronnie McDowell was rushed to the hospital after experiencing a stroke onstage. His son, Tyler Dean, just took to
Facebook to update fans on the status of his father's recent health scare, which included some scary surgery complications.Videos by Wide Open Country
"Today was quite the chapter," the country singer's son told Facebook. "Tears, shaking, prayers - some shared with family, others alone. A couple of times, I walked outside, because everything unfolding made me believe he was gone."
Dean admitted that that day was "one of the most emotionally challenged days of my life." The day after the surgery had taken place, he said, "Seeing the man that means the world to me having to go through something like that was just terrifying."
Luckily, Dean shared that the complication from the surgery, which was likely related to blood thinners, was "handled quickly." Based on an update posted by McDowell himself, it would seem that despite complications, the singer is back in good spirits.
McDowell shared a video talking about how he was feeling just yesterday. "Well, as you can see, I'm still walking," he shared with Facebook. "And the doctor gave me the green light and the go-ahead to do my show this weekend, in Russellville, Alabama."
He even seemed to be in a good mood, saying, "The doctor said, 'Do not let the girls get your heart rate up this weekend. '"
What Exactly Happened With McDowell's Health Scare
Throughout the summer, McDowell has been performing at venues across Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and Kentucky. When he had his health scare during a performance at the Summer Solstice Music Festival, he began slurring words after a few songs into his set.
His son, Tyler Dean, shared that he "knew something wasn't right as I had his vocals in my in-ear monitor and I could hear him slurring his words and forgetting the words to his songs that he has sang for many years." Dean said that he had his dad come offstage for a second, who revealed that he wasn't feeling very well, and "thought he might be having a stroke."
McDowell was rushed to the Reading Hospital in Pennsylvania and consulted doctors on the state of his health. Tyler told Rolling Stone magazine at the end of June that his dad would have to have a carotid endarterectomy, which removes plaque buildup from an artery.
After a visit to Vanderbilt Hospital for his surgery, the singer seems to be feeling much better. McDowell's other son, Ronnie McDowell Jr., also reported via
Facebook that "The doctor said he is doing great...I can not thank you all enough for all of your thoughts and prayers."McDowell will be ready to perform at his show this weekend at the Roxy Theatre in Russellville, as well as a show later this summer in Memphis, TN.
