This must be the season for controversial jeans ads. First actress Sydney Sweeney caused a stir with her ad for American Eagle jeans. Now Beyonce is at the center of a rumpus because of her Levi's ad. Whether intentional or not, the Cowboy Carter singer appears to resemble the late screen goddess Marilyn Monroe. She is decked out in a denim outfit, with a fluffy, platinum blonde wig and deep red lipstick. Outspoken British commentator Piers Morgan noted on August 6 per Billboard via X that he was "Very disappointed to see Beyonce culturally appropriate Marilyn Monroe in her new Levi's ad."
Piers Morgan Seems To Criticize Beyonce for "Cultural Appropriation" of Marilyn Monroe in Jeans Ad: "It Was a JOKE!"
When a backlash against him ensued, Morgan reacted. He wrote, "I would say I can't believe anyone took my obvious Beyonce joke post seriously...but I forgot the woke brigade have zero sense of humour."
One person who commented on the uproar observed that Beyonce is "hotter" than Monroe. Morgan replied, I don't disagree."
In fact, singer Dionne Warwick jumped into the fray and noted that he was "getting involved in women's business again." Morgan retorted, "Oh not you too, Dionne.......it was a JOKE!"
The Issue Did Not End There
Morgan had more to say. He took on the concept of "cultural appropriation," referring to it as "bull____." He asked, "What's wrong with celebrating another country's fashion, food etc.?"
Morgan Had a Previous Skirmish With Beyonce
Ten months ago, Morgan had as a guest on his show Uncensored Jaguar Wright. Per the outlet, the singer alleged that Beyonce and her spouse Jay-Z were "monsters" who had "hundreds of victims." Lawyers for the couple "denied the allegations and demanded that Morgan remove them fom the episode." Morgan did so, with an apology.
The Singer Herself Has Stayed Out of the Controversy
As of now, Beyonce has not publicly gotten involved in the ongoing dust-up.
Another forthright media personality, Megyn Kelly, has weighed in with her own candid opinion, however. She referred to Beyonce's jeans ad, per the outlet, as "artificial, fake, enhanced [and] trying too hard."
Whether there will be more fallout from the ad remains to be seen.
