American Idol Season 24 is upon us, and Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood are returning as judges. This season is a particularly special one for Underwood, as it marks the 20th anniversary of her winning season. The Season 4 winner, country singer and entertainment icon, is ready to take on this season like it's nobody's business. Here's what viewers have in store.

Last year, Underwood's addition to the judging panel was a significant draw and is expected to continue to be this year. She replaced Katy Perry in 2025, who had been a judge for 7 seasons, from season 16 to season 22.
In February of 2024, Perry announced her departure via an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! saying, "I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat." The singer explained that although she loved the show, she wanted to "go and see the world and maybe bring new music."
What Katy Perry's Been up to Since Leaving 'American Idol'
This year, it's obvious that Perry has been doing just that. She's currently in the middle of her Lifetimes Tour, playing songs from her most recent album, 143. Fans have been capturing moments from the tour all summer, sharing videos of Perry running around and using various props. She told a crowd in Anaheim, "This is a celebration of all of my albums...the last time I was on tour was eight years ago. I am Katy Perry, and you are on The Lifetimes Tour!" Fans have also had the option to choose what Katy Perry songs they want to hear.
Now that Underwood is on Idol for a second season, she becomes the first previous winner to hold this spot. While other previous winners, like Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia Barrino, have held mentor positions, Underwood is the only judge.
The show seems like it plans to build on its momentum from the previous year, and it's going to do just that. We can't wait to see these judges take on the panel again and succeed in their quest to find the next "American Idol," which starts this Tuesday with "Idol Across America."
