According to thetakeout.com, the Biloxi, Mississippi-based company "recalled roughly 98,916 pounds of catfish fillet products because they had never received a federal inspection." The recall went out on September 15, 2025. The product was produced from September 2, 2024 to September 5, 2025. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture did not check the catfish to ensure that it was definitely sufficiently safe for people to consume.
There are no reports of illness resulting from ingesting the catfish at this time, per southernliving.com.
The Company Recently Issued a Statement
Per Newsweek, the statement released by the company on September 16 read like this in part. "The USDA recall was the direct result of Quality Poultry & Seafood's ongoing collaboration with the USDA to strengthen and continuously improve operations. The company sells more than 1,200 different products and maintains full transparency with all regulatory agencies. This recall reflects a joint effort to ensure complete compliance. Quality Poultry & Seafood remains fully committed to regulatory compliance, transparency, food safety, public health and upholding the highest standards."
Consuming Uninspected Fish Can Be Very Risky
Without an inspection, there is no way for consumers to know for sure that a seafood product is free of contaminants like bacteria that could potentially lead to a serious illness. The FSIS is telling people to throw away the frozen catfish if they bought it or bring it back to the store for a refund.
More information and details on this recall are available on the FSIS website. Photos of the affected products are here.
