Keith Urban Co-Wrote a Loving Song for Nicole Kidman, Then Seemingly Changed It for Another Woman: "It's Really Like a Vow in So Many Ways"

A song called "The Fighter: that was co-written and recorded by Keith Urban, has been getting a huge amount to scrutiny in the past few days. This week came the bombshell announcement that he and his wife of 19 years, actress Nicole Kidman, are divorcing. The news sent shock waves through the entertainment world and beyond. The two always seemed happy and compatible, then it's suddenly splitsville.

As for the song, Urban said per People via Billboard eight years ago that "The Fighter" originated "from a conversation my wife and I had early on in our relationship...." That fact makes a change which was made in the lyrics, seemingly for another woman, all the more significant and telling.

Urban Described the Song's Meaning

The singer, 57, said that "...when things get tough, I need to hold [Kidman] tighter and just try to take care of her." He added, "The song is about wanting to heal somebody, wanting to take care of somebody, wanting to protect somebody. It's really like a vow in so many ways. I want that tenderness to not have to get hardened to the world. That's my job as her husband, to put myself around her so she can remain that way. And that's really the chorus of The Fighter."

The Lyric Change and Its Connection to Maggie Baugh

Baugh, described by People as "a utility player and rising country star," seems to have caught Urban's eye. During a recent concert, when Urban sang "The Fighter," the lyrics were altered. Per the outlet, "The original line 'When they're tryna get to you, baby I'll be the fighter' was sung as 'When they're tryna get to you, Maggie I'll be your guitar player' by Urban."

To underscore the performance, Baugh, 25, posted a video of it on Instagram. That was prior to the news of Urban and Kidman's marriage dissolution.

Fans Came Down Hard on Urban

People posted some harsh comments on Instagram criticizing the singer.

"Wow, that song was made for Nicole. For him to do that that tells us what he's really all about. That's just disgusting. Nicole deserves much better...."

"Lost all respect for Keith. So disappointed and heartsick for Nicole."

"Maggie he will change the lyrics again when he's done with you"

"Why in the world would you post this? Have some class. Or maybe you don't mind having none. And Keith? lost all respect. Sure couples separate but to make this that public. Shame on both of them."
