"Y'all forgive me, I'm not sure how much I even belong speaking up here right now," Jelly Roll admitted to the crowd at the Dove Awards. "I ain't been this nervous since I went to criminal court y'all."
The singer went on to quote scripture from the book of Matthew. "I was listening to him and I was thinking about Matthew when he talks about 'the least." When I was hungry, you fed me. When I was thirsty, you gave me water. I was in jail, you came and visited me. And I realize that I am standing here because people took time with the least."
He also encouraged those in the crowd to "put faith on your feet and feet on your faith." He said, "Walk out of this building, and go do for the least."
Jelly Roll took home the award for Song of the Year for his duet of "Hard Fought Hallelujah" with Brandon Lake. The song not only debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart, but also held the position for 20 weeks.
Jelly Roll Talks About His Relationship With God
On the K-Love morning show, Jelly Roll talked with Brandon Lake about where is faith journey started, compared to where it is now. "If you knew how I was talking in interviews 5 years ago," the singer shared, "and then you see how I'm talking today, imagine what God can do with me in 5 years."
He compared his relationship with God to his relationship with his wife, Bunnie Xo, saying that patience is the secret sauce to developing a truly fruitful partnership. "It took me and my wife years to learn eachothers' love language. Years of like dedication and arguing unnecessarily and trauma triggers and therapy," Jelly Roll said. "And we have the most fruitful relationship now." His relationship with God, he believes, has also been made better over time.
It's unsure whether this speech means that Jelly Roll plans to make a full on transition to Christian artistry, but regardless, it definitely seems like he's going to continue sharing his story. And for this country singer, God is definitely a huge part of that.
