Why This Performance on ‘The Voice’ Moved Reba McEntire To Tears

Learn why Reba McEntire became emotional after a performance of Martina McBride's 2011 ballad "I'm Gonna Love You Through It".

It's not every day that Snoop Dogg hands you a tissue on national television. But then again, we're not Reba McEntire.

The country star needed to dry her eyes after contestant Aubrey Nicole gave a stunning performance of Martina McBride's "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" on last night's episode.

What Was It About the Song That Got Reba McEntire Emotional?

For those not familiar with the 2011 ballad, it's about a woman diagnosed with breast cancer and the emotional and physical struggles she faces through treatment. It's written from the perspective of the woman's husband, who promises to "love her through it."

The song paints a vivid picture of treatment. Here's an example:

"Cancer don't discriminate or care if you're just 38

With three kids who need you in their lives."

This emotional performance struck a chord because McEntire lost her stepson, Brandon Blackstock, to cancer in August. Blackstock, who was the son of McEntire's former husband Narvel Blackstock, was also the ex-husband of Kelly Clarkson, with whom he shared two kids.

Nicole chose the song for her father, who was diagnosed with cancer before she left home to attend college. Thankfully, his cancer is now in remission. It definitely added another layer to her performance.

What Did McEntire Tell Nicole?

After drying her eyes with Snoop Dogg's tissue, McEntire praised Nicole's performance and talked about how the song made her feel.

"I lost my oldest son because he did not win with cancer," McEntire said, referring to Blackstock. "That was a real reminder that life goes on, and we sing songs about it so we can remember the ones around us that we love so much, that we lean on at times like this. You did a great job."

McEntire gave Nicole the win for the Knockout round.

McEntire Says She Misses Blackstock

McEntire and her stepson had a strong bond, and she has said she loved him as if he were one of her own. Last month, while on the red carpet at the 2025 Emmy Awards, McEntire gave an update on how her family was doing after Blackstock's death.

"Well, we miss him. We miss him every minute," she said. "The kids are doing well. They're all bonding together and hanging out with each other and taking it one day at a time. We know God's got this."
