Jerry Jones Is More Concerned With Oil Than the Cowboys’ Defense

Trading Micah Parsons may have been a good long-term move for Jerry Jones and his Dallas Cowboys. However, it's currently causing his team to give up some much-needed victories.

Under defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys have allowed 404 yards and more than 30 points per game, ranking them 31st in scoring defense. Additionally, their opponents convert nearly half of their third-down attempts.

The pass and run defenses are equally atrocious. They give up 4.9 yards per carry and allow opposing QBs to complete nearly 69 percent of passes with an average of 8.1 yards per attempt.

Meanwhile, Parsons continues to make a significant impact with the Green Bay Packers. He is currently ranked sixth in the league for sacks (6.5) and is tied for third in pressure.

But at least QB Dak Prescott is having a good year, right?

Is Jones going to do anything to turn around the Cowboys' 3-4-1 record? Judging from a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, he has no plans to do so anytime soon.

What Is Jerry Jones Doing?

Jones has invested over $1 billion in oil drilling company Comstock Resources. It is currently drilling in East Texas, which is known to have some of the world's deepest oil reserves.

"There's $100 billion present value with gas out there," said Jones. "That's why I'm talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys."

With the NFL trade deadline in less than a week (Nov. 4), Cowboy fans can't be comforted by the fact that the team's owner isn't interested in turning things around.

Jones Isn't the Only NFL Owner With a "Side Hustle"

Along with Comstock Resources, Jones has also ventured into real estate and hospitality. However, he shares this multi-industry approach with other NFL owners.

Stephen M. Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins, has investments in SoulCycle and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. The team is currently at 2-6.

Carolina Panthers' owner David Tepper is also a hedge-fund manager. It currently holds a 4-4 record, which will hopefully lead to an improvement from last year's 5-12 record.

Maybe these owners need to delegate some of their duties to team personnel.
