Megan Moroney Reveals How She Met Kacey Musgraves as a Fan Before They Shared a Dressing Room at the CMAs

Megan Moroney met Kacey Musgraves years ago, but she wasn't famous yet. Here's that story, plus the latest on her new album.

It's always sweet when we get to hear stories about our idols meeting their idols, especially in country music. Megan Moroney has often referred to Kacey Musgraves as "the reason [she] wanted to write songs." The singer recently shared how she met Musgraves, a story that dates back long before she ever moved to Nashville.

At the time, Moroney was just a fan, waiting outside Kacey's tour bus to get a chance to meet her. Moroney was willing to do anything to meet Kacey, even if that meant making a trek with one good foot. "It was after her show," Moroney explained to Taste of Country. "I had one shoe on because I had just gotten knee surgery, so I had this really big cast thing on my leg — so I had one cowgirl boot on."

Little did Megan know back then that it wouldn't be the last time she would run into Musgraves. Just last year, the two stars shared a dressing room at the CMAs. Initially, Megan was worried that Kacey might remember the first time they crossed paths.

"When I met her," Moroney shared with Jake Shane, "I wasn't expecting [anything] because she was performing, and award shows are just stressful. I wasn't even expecting her to take the time to take a picture with me or anything 'cause the CMAs put us together."

Moroney reflected on the first time that they met. "She could have been like, 'Girl... remember when you stalked me behind the bus? Now I have to share a dressing room with this girl? But she was so kind and sweet and was like, 'Thanks for all the nice things you always say about me.'

Moroney Steps Into Her "Pink" Era With New Album 'Cloud 9'

At this year's CMAs, Megan Moroney is up for six nominations, alongside Lainey Wilson and Ella Langley. Her nominations this year are mostly centered around her album, Am I Okay?. However, it seems like the singer is ready to move into a new era with her music.

Just last night, Moroney announced that her third studio album, Cloud 9, would be dropping early next year. Many fans suspected she would be moving into a "yellow" era, based on how she had been describing the project. However, Moroney surprised us yesterday when she dropped an Instagram reel, in which the colors change from blue to pink.

She shared with Country Now, "I am so excited for my fans and I to dive into this new world of Cloud 9 together. Similar to the first two albums, it's all written about honest, personal experiences, but these songs were written by the strongest, most confident version of myself I've ever been." Moroney shared, "Cloud 9 is a state of mind, and I have no doubt this will be the best chapter yet."

Megan Moroney's Cloud 9 is set to release on February 20, 2026.
