Actor With Over 250 Roles, Including a Fan-Favorite 90s Smash-Hit, Dead at 81

Udo Keir has been around for decades, including a role in the smash-hit comedy "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" back in the 90s

If you grew up in the 90s, then it's likely that you can recite some, if not all, of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" verbatim. The movie is iconic, and is some of Jim Carrey's best work. Sadly, the "Ace Ventura" family lost a member on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Udo Kier, who played "Camp" in the 1994 smash hit, sadly passed away at 81. Delbert McBride, Keir's partner, confirmed the news to Variety. According to IMDB, Keir was still working on some projects, with "The Ark: An Iron Sky Story" and "The Dresden Codex" both in post-production.

IMDB also notes that Keir's career spanned 275 on-screen roles, ranging from B-roll movies, voice-overs in computer games, TV Shows, and of course, the occasional hit.

Other than "Ace Ventura," Keir also shone in the 1991 hit "My Own Private Idaho," which included Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix.

There are currently no public details regarding Keir's passing, although it's clear that he will be missed throughout multiple entertainment circles.

Udo Keir Always Wanted To Leave an Impression

During a 2024 interview with Variety, Keir explained his mindset when accepting a movie role.

"I have never asked a director, 'I would like to work with you," Keir said. "...I don't calculate it, but I want to do something in a movie which people will remember. I'm not an actor who is happy to get a script and do exactly what is written. That would be boring. I have to bring something of my own personality into the film."

There's no doubt that Keir achieved his goal. He's been a memorable addition to countless movies, and continually found work all the way up to his final year. Stacking up north of 250+ roles is impressive, doing so over a multi-decade span speaks volumes to his talent, likability and professionalism.

The entertainment industry is cut-throat, yet somehow, Keir continually navigated it with poise. His passing will be a tough blow to the movie world, most notably in terms of B-movies, where he often shone and added credibility.

Keir's extensive body of work keeps his memory alive, and no matter what genre or style you prefer, he has likely created something you'll enjoy. After all, his priority was to leave an impression, and he did just that.
