Lainey Wilson Reveals Which One of Her Songs Is Her Dad’s Favorite

Lainey Wilson revealed that this song off her 'Whirlwind' deluxe album is her dad's favorite. What's your guess?

Lainey Wilson's song, "Somewhere Over Laredo", which is featured on Whirlwind Deluxe, is one of her most beloved songs. In a recent interview with Katie & Company, Wilson revealed that she's thrilled the song is getting recognition. However, there's one person who loves it more than anyone. That would be her dad, Brian Wilson.

"My daddy told me, he was like, 'It don't get no better than 'Somewhere Over Laredo.' You can write whatever.' And that's his favorite song. And so I'm so proud of it, and I'm glad to see that there are people in the industry who think it needs its flowers too."

Wilson wrote "Somewhere Over Laredo" with a rockstar cast of writers, which includes Andy Albert, Dallas Wilson, and Trannie Anderson. The idea came from saying "somewhere over the rainbow" a little too fast, which makes it sound like "Somewhere Over Laredo".

Lainey spoke on the song's success, which she admitted has been a bit of a surprise. "I was not expecting it at all this year, to be honest with you, but it feels good. I'm so proud of 'Somewhere Over Laredo,' and I was hoping that this song would get its flowers."

Lainey Wilson Talks About Her Hometown in Louisiana

Although the song might suggest it, Lainey Wilson is actually not from Loredo at all. Wilson hails from the small town of Baskin, Louisiana, where she says that she got a speeding ticket at 15. Now, the street where she got the speeding ticket has been affectionately renamed "Lainey Wilson Highway."

Wilson revealed in an interview with Southern Living that sometimes she goes back home just to stay grounded. "My granny lives like a mile from my parents," she shared. "And I just go sit down with her for a little bit—kind of catch up, take it easy, and do all the things that I grew up doing. Even this past weekend, me and my sister were cleaning my granny's house and just doing what we've always done. And I don't know any other way."

Talking with KIX 102.5, Lainey explained that "Somewhere Over Laredo" is special to her because of the nostalgia it evokes. "It's about that nostalgia for things and people that weren't meant to stay in your life, but they still left their mark on you."

I suppose we all have a Laredo of our own, and for Lainey, that Laredo is her hometown of Baskin, Louisiana.
