The Los Angeles Medical Examiner lists Ransone's death as a "hanging." The actor died by suicide on December 19.
Ransone was known for playing characters like "Ziggy" Sobatka and the adult version of Eddie Kaspbrak in "It: Chapter 2." He was also known for his roles in "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Hawaii Five-0," "Generation Kill," and "Treme," among others.
On Sunday, Ransone's wife, Jamie McPhee, took to Instagram to share some words about her husband. "I told you I have loved you 1000 times before, and I know I will love you again," she shared as a final message to her spouse. You told me - I need to be more like you, and you need to be more like me - and you were so right."
McPhee also shared a link to a GoFundMe page for her children. So far, the page has already raised over $40k. The purpose is "to give Jamie the space to focus fully on Jack and Violet, to care for them, protect their sense of security, and ensure they have a bright future—even without James's light present in their everyday lives."
Ransone Was Open About His Struggles Over the Years
Ransone was born on June 2, 1979, in Baltimore, Maryland, to his parents, Joyce Ransone and James Finley Ransone II. After struggling to find a public school that was a good fit, Ransone enrolled in the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology. He claimed this school "saved" him as a teenager.
In his 20s, he briefly attended the School of Visual Arts (SVA) for filmmaking, but eventually dropped out. He later shared that he underwent various hardships during this period of his life, including a heroin addiction. In 2021, Ransone opened up about his struggles with sexual abuse as a child, which led him to feel deep shame and embarrassment growing up.
Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and his two children, Jack and Violet.
