Smith was later pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The same press release has stated that Smith's boyfriend, Jordan D. Jackson-Small, has been arrested in connection with the murder.
"On December 21, 2025, at 9:18 A.M., authorities received a 911 call reporting a stabbing. Upon their arrival to a residence on Grove Avenue, they discovered Imani Smith, 26, of Edison with stab wounds," the press release reads. "Smith was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where she was ultimately pronounced deceased."
Small now faces four charges: first-degree murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
"As with all criminal defendants, the charges against Jackson-Small are just allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty," the press release noted.
Smith comprised her role on Broadway between September 27, 2011, and September 23, 2012.
Imani Dia Smith's Family Has Set Up a GoFundMe
Smith's family has now set up a GoFundMe page. They have also used that platform to issue a statement on her death.
"Imani had her whole life ahead of her," the statement reads. "She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person. A true triple-threat performer." The family also reflected on her time on Broadway, writing that playing Young Nala in The Lion King was an experience that reflected "the joy, creativity, and light she put into the world."
The GoFundMe has raised over $66,000, with a goal of $75,000. The funds raised will help with a range of costs, including funeral arrangements, trauma therapy, and ongoing support for the son that Smith leaves behind, among other things.
No details regarding Small's impending court case have been released. However, the trial will likely have a level of public interest due to the media's interest in Smith's passing.
