On Thursday, April 9, news broke that, starting in December, young, eligible men will be automatically registered for the military draft pool. That is a slight change to the current requirement that men aged 18 to 26 register with the Selective Service in the event of a draft.

"The nationwide measure has no connection to the ongoing war with Iran and was passed with bipartisan support months before the current conflict with the country," CNN reported. "But the Trump administration has declined to rule out the possibility of putting US troops on the ground, and the war has led to renewed attention on the draft policy."
As you would expect, the internet was awash with mixed reactions to the Selective Service update.
"Soon it'll be harder to cast a vote than to be sent to war involuntarily," @DefenseBaron wrote in response to the report, via X.
Another user pointed out that leaders in other countries often send their children into military service. They questioned whether American leaders would be willing to do the same.
"During SCOTUS Birthright Citizen Case last week British law was cited," @IAMFridayJones wrote in a quote tweet. "Do you know what the Monarchy still does, send their sons to the military. Are Senators, Congress, POTUS sending their sons?"
More Users Shared Their Thoughts on the Automatic Military Draft
Some users were quick to point out that the new update is an instance of the government working more efficiently.
"This is the automation of an existing process and a rare instance of a government getting more efficient," the user posted on X.
There are countless posts regarding the update. People are very firmly for or against the automatic military draft.
Nevertheless, the change is coming into effect toward the end of this year. Fortunately, it's unlikely to change much.
