Former NFL Quarterback Tragically Dies at 57 After Brave Cancer Battle

Former NFL quarterback Browning Nagle dies aged 57 after battling colon cancer, with tributes pouring in for the ex-New York Jets player.

Former NFL quarterback Browning Nagle has died at the age of 57 following a brave battle with colon cancer.

Nagle spent time with several teams throughout his career, including the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, and Atlanta Falcons. As well as stints in the Arena Football League before retiring in 2000.

The New York Jets confirmed the news on Friday, April 10, with tributes quickly pouring in for the former quarterback.

NFL Player Dies Aged 57 as Tributes Pour In

Nagle played college football at both West Virginia in 1986 and Louisville from 1987 to 1990. He made a lasting impact.

He was named one of the Most Valuable Players in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl. He set multiple passing records, including a 451-yard performance against Alabama.

His standout college career led to him being selected in the second round, 34th overall, in the 1991 NFL Draft.

"Browning was a great guy," former teammate Boomer Esiason said. "He had an infectious laugh and was so much fun to be around. We often competed against each other while also showing respect for one another."

"I will always remember the laughter and infectious spirit Browning had and how much he enjoyed out-driving me on the golf course."

"May he rest in peace knowing he lived an impactful life."

Nagle spent three seasons with the Jets from 1991 to 1993, appearing in 18 games. His most active year came in 1992, when he played 14 games, including 13 starts.

During his time in New York, he threw for 2,361 yards, completing 199 of 403 passes. He had seven touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He finished with a 3-10 record as a starter.

The Former Quarterback's Career Spanned NFL and Arena Football

Nagle played five seasons in the NFL, with additional spells across multiple teams after leaving the Jets in 1993.

He made one appearance for the Indianapolis Colts in 1994. He later featured in five games for the Atlanta Falcons in 1996.

Across his NFL career, Nagle appeared in 24 games, throwing for 2,489 yards with 213 completions on 437 attempts and eight touchdowns.

"We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great," the University of Louisville said

"His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and teammates during this difficult time."

Nagle later continued his career in the Arena Football League. He spent one season each with the Orlando Predators and Buffalo Destroyers between 1999 and 2000. He threw for 74 touchdowns.
