"I consider myself cancer-free," Sanders said. "...I was fighting, I was walking out on the property with a bag of blood and urine and trying to get back. But this expedited the process. Last year at this time, I was in a whole different place, and I'm just thankful."
According to The Associated Press, Sanders underwent robotic surgery to help rebuild his bladder using part of his intestine. The surgery was clearly a success and likely played a role in the former superstar's recovery.
Later in the interview, Sanders admitted to being "elated" by the outcome of his cancer battle.
"If I pull my shirt up, I'm not scarred, it's not flawed," he continued. "I'm not embarrassed by anything that transpired. I'm elated by everything that transpired."
Sanders will undoubtedly look forward to getting back to work, as he continues to lead the University of Colorado's football team as their head coach.
Deion Sanders Looking Ahead to the New College Football Season
Sanders, who is affectionately known as "Coach Prime," has already begun preparing for the upcoming season on the sidelines.
"I have the best coaching staff I've ever featured," Sanders told The Associated Press. "Everybody's unified."
The former NFL star will be entering his fourth season as the head coach of Colorado. He will undoubtedly be looking to turn things around, too. Over his first three seasons in charge, Sanders has led the team to a 16-21 record, including a loss at the Alamo Bowl in 2024.
Fortunately, Sanders knows what it takes to win, and it's clear he's implementing changes to the overall program. Those changes will take some time to begin paying dividends, although the hope is that we will start to see some additional success in the near future.
Of course, Sanders will likely take a holistic approach to coaching this year. After all, he's already won the biggest battle of his life. At this point, everything else will likely seem minuscule in comparison.
