The ACM Performance That Made Nick Jonas Go To Therapy Afterward

We all have bad days at work. Maybe you were giving a speech or presentation and suddenly you just went blank. As humiliating as that can be, at least a limited number of people are aware of your less-than-stellar effort. It's much different for a world-renowned performer. If they forget the words to a song mid-concert, say, loads of audience members know it. You can be sure that they will then post videos of the artist's red-faced moment on social media. Nick Jonas had an unfortunate incident like that on the ACM Awards in 2016. He was so shaken by it that he sought help from a therapist afterwards.

Nick Jonas Was On Stage With Kelsea Ballerini

Per Whiskey Riff, they were on stage doing Ballerini's single, "Peter Pan." Sounds routine, right? But things went miserably sideways. Fast. According to the outlet, "Jonas totally botched through the guitar solo, to the point that you had to feel bad for him as he grimaced and you saw the look of pain on his face."

That must have been excruciating for Jonas. No one wants to mess up like that in front of a huge audience. But what could he do?

He Candidly Explained What Happened That Awful Night

Jonas described the harrowing incident per the outlet via Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast. He did not mince words.

"Kelsea and I had a couple performances together, and this was one of them. I come out for my thing. I've rehearsed it a million times. I'm feeling really confident about it....I started off, it's fine and as I sort of walked towards her, I just went completely blank and I hit a wrong note and blacked out basically and clocked that it was wrong and I couldn't stop."

Jonas continued, "To this day and hours of unpacking it, I can't really figure out exactly what happened, but I was rushed into a car, right to a plane right after and I looked at my manager and said, 'I think that was bad.' I was, like, in shock kinda. It was a really traumatic moment that shaped the pressure I put on myself to be perfect and to always be on."

It Had Consequences For Him

Jonas acknowledged that his onstage falter was consequential for him. "In retrospect, I can kind of laugh about how big I thought it was. But it did travel more than I wish it would have, and it did cause me to go to therapy."
