Adam Levine Leaves 'The Voice,' Gwen Stefani Returns as Coach

Adam Levine won't return for the 17th season of The Voice. Carson Daly, the coach of the NBC series, made the announcement on Today this morning (5/24).

"After 16 seasons Adam Levine, our beloved coach and friend, has decided to leave The Voice. Adam was one of the original coaches that launched the show, winning the competition three times, and inspiring many of the artists that he worked so closely with over the years," Daly said. "Of course, many viewers will miss watching his frenemy relationship with Blake Shelton. He'll always be a cherished member of The Voice family, and of course we wish him nothing but the best."

Gwen Stefani will return to the singing competition to replace Levine. Stefani previously served as a coach on the show in season 9 and season 12. Stefani has been dating fellow The Voice coach Blake Shelton in 2015.

Shelton, the show's only remaining original coach,  weighed in on the surprising news.

"Having a hard time wrapping my head around @adamlevine not being at @NBCTheVoice anymore. After 16 seasons that changed both of our lives. I only found out about this yesterday and it hasn't set in on me yet. Gonna miss working with that idiot."

Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend will return as coaches for the new season.

The 16th season of The Voice wrapped on Tuesday (May 21). Maelyn Jarmon, a member of John Legend's team, was named the  winner.
