Beloved Country Group Cancels Two Shows After Frontman’s Cancer Surgery

After sharing the devastating news, the band's fans took to social media to wish the musician a speedy recovery.

The Mavericks shared some good news and some bad news about the status of the band and its beloved frontman, Raul Malo.

Last year, Malo shared with fans the news of his cancer diagnosis.

At that time, Malo explained, "Recently, the doctors found a few cancerous spots in my digestive system. Obviously, this isn't the news I was hoping to get, or to share with you all."

On Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, in a statement posted on its social media, the band provided its fans with the latest update on Malo, and the encouraging response was touching, to say the least.

What Did The Mavericks Share About Raul Malo?

Although the message from The Mavericks was encouraging, it also likely brought some disappointment to some fans who had planned to see the group this weekend.

Here is the band's statement in its entirety:

"Hello all,

While we had hoped to resume our tour next weekend after the summer break, unfortunately we will have to cancel the upcoming performances in Las Vegas on Sept 4 & Santa Fe on Sept 6 as Raul continues to rest and recover at home from surgery earlier this month. At this time, we do anticipate the shows supporting Dwight Yoakam, Sept 11-13 to continue as planned.

We will be returning to Big Blues Bender in 2026, but unfortunately we are not able to reschedule our show in Santa Fe at this time. Refunds for the Santa Fe show will be available at the point of purchase.

We apologize sincerely for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate everyone's continued understanding this year. We look forward to bringing you the show you know and love as soon as we possibly can.

Fans Offered Malo and The Mavericks Their Support

The well-wishes from fans and peers soon came pouring in.

One commenter wrote, "We just want Raul healthy! That's all."

Another user added, "I hope that Raul is healing quickly. You guys are in my thoughts."

Fellow musician Drayton Farley said, "Raul is a force and a gentleman. Rest up!"

"I'm glad that Raul's health is being put above everything else," someone commented. "The way it should be."

We certainly wish Malo a safe and speedy recovery as well.
