Bill Murray Gets Honest About "Doing Some Damage" In His Personal Life

American actor and comedian Bill Murray has recently looked back on his life and admitted to "doing some damage" in his personal life. The 74-year-old who's best known for his role in Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day revealed this at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The festival was held in Park City, Utah, on Sunday, January 26.

Bill Murray Admits To "Doing Some Damage" In His Life

Murray got into detail about the past characters he has played when an interviewer questioned him. They asked the star about him playing complicated characters with "poisonous" charm.

"It's always interesting when you're playing a guy who has done some damage," Murray said before comparing his own life. "I know I've done some damage. It's unconscious damage, but it's some sort of penance to play them and to show that, you know, to show accepting responsibility for it."

Murray didn't get into specifics on what he meant by doing some damage, but he did mention his role in On the Rocks. This 2020 film directed by Sofia Coppola had Murray play a playboy father with infidelity tendencies.

"I was answering for a lot of things through that role," the actor admitted.

Murray's comments are telling as he had some recent controversies. He stopped acting in 2022 after Searchlight Pictures canceled the production of Being Mortal, which Murray was on set for. This was due to complaints from a young female assistant made toward Murray for his allegedly inappropriate on-set behavior.

On top of that, just this month Lucy Liu spoke up about confronting Murray on the Charlie's Angels set. The 56-year-old actress revealed how she "stood up" to Murray after he would throw insults her way while using "inexcusable and unacceptable."

While Murray has not yet responded to Liu's allegations, he has spoken up about the Being Mortal incident. "I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn't taken that way," he had said. "The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check it all out, investigate it, and so they stopped the production. But as of now, we're talking and we're trying to make peace with each other."

Three years ago, Murray saw the incident as a learning experience. So perhaps since then, the actor has been reflecting on his actions and behaviors during his lengthy career.
