'Blue Bloods' Spin-Off 'Boston Blue' Lands Major Hollywood Actor To Replace Tom Selleck

The show, taking over Blue Bloods' Friday 10 p.m. slot, follows NYPD detective Danny Reagan. The role, of course, is played by Donnie Wahlberg, as he joins the Boston Police Department.

In Boston Blue, Danny Reagan partners with Detective Lena Silver, portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green, known for The Walking Dead. Lena hails from the influential Silver family, headed by Reverend Peters, described as an open-minded pastor of a historic Baptist church. Hudson, celebrated for roles in Ghostbusters and Miss Congeniality, brings a paternal gravitas akin to Tom Selleck's Frank Reagan in the original series.

CBS revealed the Silver family tree, with Reverend Peters as the father of District Attorney Mae Silver and grandfather to Superintendent Ashley Silver, rookie officer Isaac Silver, and Detective Lena Silver. Only Hudson and Martin-Green have been cast so far, with additional roles to be announced.

Building on 'Blue Bloods' Success

Boston Blue capitalizes on the Blue Bloods fanbase, which followed the Reagan family for 14 seasons until its 2025 finale. Wahlberg, 55, reprises his role as the tough, unorthodox Danny Reagan. He will now navigate Boston's police force. The series, originally pitched as Jamaica Plain, shifted the focus to Danny. The idea was to leverage the original show's audience.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television, the spinoff boasts industry heavyweights. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serve as showrunners, with Wahlberg, Bruckheimer, and KristieAnne Reed as executive producers. While an exact premiere date remains undisclosed, anticipation is high for its late 2025 debut.

Fan Hopes, Familiar Faces

Fans are eager for updates on familiar Blue Bloods characters. Marisa Ramirez's Maria Baez, Danny's NYPD partner, has not been confirmed for the spin-off, but a teased romance in the Blue Bloods finale and Wahlberg's playful emoji response to a fan on X have sparked speculation. Erin Reagan's Bridget Moynahan and Jamie Reagan's Will Estes have also expressed interest in reprising their roles, though no confirmations have been made.

Tom Selleck's involvement as Frank Reagan remains uncertain. For now, fans are left to wonder if the Reagan patriarch will appear. Nevertheless, Boston Blue promises to blend fresh faces with Blue Bloods' gritty drama.
