The cast of "The Brady Bunch" spilled the beans on why the iconic sitcom kept Carol Brady's first husband a total mystery, while dishing about Mike Brady's late wife with more heart.

On Tuesday's episode of their "The Real Brady Bros" podcast, Christopher Knight (Peter Brady), Barry Williams (Greg Brady), Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady), and Mike Lookinland (Bobby Brady) rewatched the show's pilot, "The Honeymoon," and tackled the juicy question: What's the deal with Carol's ex?
Brady Drama Behind the Scenes
The show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz, had a bold vision: Mike Brady, a widower with three sons, marries Carol, a divorcée with three daughters. But ABC pushed back hard. "The network felt a divorcée created too many problems for the series," Williams, 70, explained. "We're playing to a very conservative country, so they wanted Carol to be a widow."
Schwartz stuck to his guns. "Sherwood never changed it," Knight, 67, declared. "They agreed to disagree, and it was left unhandled, which is why you never see Carol's ex-husband in our pilot episode."
The show dodged any mention of Mr. Martin, leaving fans puzzled. Carol's maiden name, Tyler, and her pre-Brady surname, Martin, only deepened the confusion. "They don't deal with Mr. Martin by reference even," Knight added with a chuckle.
Meanwhile, the pilot gave a nod to Mike's first wife, the boys' mother, in a touching scene. "Greg, Peter, and Bobby talk about her," Olsen, 63, noted. "It's kind of sad she's never mentioned again."
The pilot dropped a cryptic hint about Carol's past. Olsen quoted Florence Henderson's Carol: "Three years ago, I thought it was the end of the world, and now it's just the beginning."
Divorce or death? "It's unclear," Olsen said, "and viewers were left to decide." The ambiguity sparked wild fan theories for decades.
The mystery inspired 1996's "A Very Brady Sequel," where Tim Matheson played Roy Martin, a shady guy claiming to be Carol's long-lost husband with amnesia and a new face. Spoiler: Cindy and Bobby bust him as a con man. "The movie had fun with it," Lookinland quipped.
Near-Death on Set and Lasting Legacy
Olsen dropped a bombshell, revealing she "almost died" filming the pilot. "That's a story for another day," she teased, leaving listeners hanging. The "Brady Bunch" charmed audiences on ABC from 1969 to 1974, and its quirky mysteries keep fans buzzing.
But why so secretive about Carol's ex? "Sherwood wanted her to be a divorcée, and that's that," Williams said, smiling.
