You have to love Cher. Nobody is brasher, more out there, or more sassy than she is. At 78, she has become recognized as the Goddess of Pop. She earned that title with all her hit songs and gleefully offbeat persona. Cher recently burnished her reputation for doing the unexpected and uninhibited when she dressed up as Elvis on March 6 and did a rousing rendition of the Marc Cohn song, "Walking in Memphis" at the Beacon Theater in New York. The song was on her 1995 album, It's a Man's World.

The occasion, per New York Post, was "the Ninth Annual Love Rocks NYC benefit for God's Love We Deliver." Cher delivered too!
It was a glittering night featuring Mavis Staples, Michael McDonald, and Alicia Keys. Keys paid tribute to the late Roberta Flack by singing her hit, "Killing Me Softly With His Song." Also taking the stage were Bill Murray, Kate Hudson, Jesse Malin, Beck, Grace Bowers, Peter Frampton, and Trey Anastasio.
A worthy cause, a great night.
Cher Looked Every Inch The Part Of Elvis
With her dark hair slicked into a pompadour, Cher chose to deck herself in a pair of black pants, a subtly pinstriped jacket, and a pink shirt. The effect was electrifying. Her act was received warmly. Per the outlet, "But although she may have been a drag king, Cher was the queen of this night. And as such, she was the only act whose set included any outfit changes — one for each of her three numbers — in true diva fashion."
She Reflected Movingly On Her Feelings For New York
"The first time I moved to New York, I was 14. And I've lived here off and on my whole life...And when I heard this song, I immediately knew what kind of video I had to make of what I felt in my heart."
The tune Cher was referring to is "(This Is) A Song for the Lonely." She donned a similarly casual ensemble to the one she wore in the song's video - including a ski hat and puffer coat.
I envy the people who had a ticket for this blockbuster event. It must have been a real blast.
