A report by Mediate paints a bleak picture for CNN, with the cable news outlet hitting an "all-time low in the Demo." In TV viewership terms, Demo is short for demographic, with the most coveted being in the 25-54 age bracket.
Fox has continued to strengthen its position with a ninth consecutive year at number one, both in total viewers and the Demo.
According to the report, the election results have seen sharp ratings declines for both CNN and MSNBC. CNN's primetime demo is down roughly 52% since the election. Viewer numbers reflect this decline, with the network down 45% to 405,000 viewers.
Post-election during the primetime, CNN only managed to snag 11% of the total cable audience, just behind MSNBC with 16%.
CNN's Ratings Are Down, But Fox Keeps Climbing
While CNN is bleeding viewers, Fox appears to be gaining them. Fox had over 55% of the total cable audience in prime time and 49% of the total daily viewers for the year. These numbers mark a high that the network hasn't seen since 2015.
Post-election, the numbers were even higher for Fox. The network boasted 62% of the total viewership for that period, which the Mediate report calls "unprecedented."
The report also details network performances during the election night and race. On the night, Fox racked up 13.6 million total views and 4.4 million in the demo, making it the most-viewed network on TV worldwide.
According to the Daily Mail, a recent press release by CNN focuses on the positives and accomplishments made by the network:
'For the August 2024 Democratic National Convention, CNN ranked #1 in all of TV among the key 25-54 demo. On TV, CNN ranked again as one of the top 5 networks in all of cable in Total Day (viewers) for the 5th consecutive year and in the top 10 among the Demo.'
The news outlet also reports that according to an insider, the CNN CEO and Chairman, Mark Thompson, told staff that "there are a lot of other stories out in the U.S. and around the world, and it was clear that audiences were sick of the way the media covers politics."
