Country Singer and Sister of Grammy-Winning Country Star Recounts the Near Death Experience That Changed Her Life

Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay's sister, Gabby Mooney recounts the near death experience that gave her a new perspective.

Gabby Mooney, the sister of Shay Mooney from the Grammy award-winning duo Dan + Shay, recently opened up about a near-death experience she had in 2023. In an interview with Ashan Singh of ABC News, Mooney said, even though she nearly lost her life, she experienced the most "peaceful, incredible feeling" she'd ever felt in the process.

While driving home to Arkansas, which is where she and Shay grew up, Gabby recalls having a pounding headache. "I just remember thinking, 'you're just gonna keep driving, you're gonna feel so much better in your own bed,' she shared. "I just wanted to make it home."

Even though she did end up making it home, Mooney woke up in the middle of the night feeling so "desperately ill" that her mom felt the need to get her to the hospital. At the time, tornadoes prevented them from being able to call an ambulance, but when Gabby started having seizures, her parents chose to call a private ambulance instead.

While being intubated at the hospital, as a result of having continuous seizures, Gabby ended up flatlining. It was then that she had a spiritual encounter. While she was "quote-on-quote dead," she said she could actually feel her "spirit rising." Mooney shared, "I felt that, of knowing that it was not my time, and it was just like this communication between me and the Father." Gabby shared that she felt so at peace in that moment, she "didn't want to come back."

How Gabby's Life Changed After Her Brush With Death

Two weeks later, Gabby woke up in the hospital, wondering what had happened to her. As it turns out, the country singer had suffered from hydrocephalus and a brain cyst, and her heart stopped as a result.

She told People magazine, "When I woke up, the first thing I remember is Shay was at the base of my bed, and he's rubbing my foot, and he goes, 'Hey, Sissy.' And I knew it was bad from that moment. Little brothers are not that sweet."

Her near-death experience had such an impact on her that afterward, she and her now husband, Greylan Stone, decided to seal the deal. "After that, Graylan and I were like, 'OK, if we can make it through something like this, I want to be with you forever.' This was a big test for our relationship." In November of that same year, Mooney and Stone tied the knot at her family farm in Arkansas.

The "Pray For You" singer shared that not only was her life saved by that hospital visit, but also forever changed. "I am telling you, something like this really jolts you back to reality and what's truly important."
